Quick note on "I Love You, Man."

A quick bit on the new flick starring Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg. I like the inclusion of Andy Samberg's gay character. What I like even more is that restraint was shown on the part of the screenwriters, director, et al. What I specifically mean is that they created the character as a regular guy. He didn't dress up in women's clothing. He didn't drink daiquiris. He wasn't an effeminate joke, which was a breath of fresh air because comedy writers are wont to depict the homosexual man as a flamboyant, histrionic punchline.

In I Love You, Man, Samberg presents the audience with a gay man who--gasp!--is a regular guy who works as a personal trainer and has close and satisfying relationships with his family. As it is in reality, his sexual preference is one of the many facets that comprise his personality and not the one thing that encompasses his daily life. Kudos to everyone who worked on the film. In addition to this, I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

I can't help but wonder what the religious zealots think when they encounter a character whose sexual orientation doesn't set them apart from the other 90% of the population. Hah!
